DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental Implants

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the bone in the area(s) missing teeth. The screw replaces the root of a natural tooth. The titanium screw over time will fuse to the bone, becoming a very stable platform for the replacement crown. Dental implants can be placed in the upper or lower jaws and replace single or multiple areas of missing teeth.

Why a Dental Implant?

A dental implant can often be the best treatment for missing teeth.  Dental implants do not require other natural teeth to be stable.  A dental implant appears precisely like a natural tooth.  Dental implants are stable and secure when chewing.  Best of all, no adjacent teeth are altered for a dental implant. Teeth help to stimulate bone and reduce the recession of bone or tissue.

Dental implants replace the natural tooth root and can aid in bone stimulation, reducing the chance of bone recession. Loose or “wiggly” teeth can sometimes be detrimental to the surrounding bone causing loss of the bone. Dental implants can be an ideal replacement for loose teeth and provide a stable bite.

Course of Treatment

Before Placement

A Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) or a 3D x-ray of the suggested dental implant area.  Also, a CEREC Scan is taken of the implant area.  Both the CBCT and CEREC Scan are digitally merged, allowing the dentist to plan the angle, depth, and size implant(s) needed for placement. A guide is then created to aid during the dental implant placement procedure.

Why go through the hassle of CBCT and CEREC Scan?

Anatomic features such as natural teeth roots, sinuses, and nerves are a few significant structures that can cause complications with dental implant placements.  A CBCT and a CEREC Scan allows Magnuson Dental to plan every implant for ideal placement.  Your dentist can avoid major structures and possible complications.  Also, this process allows the perfect implant placement, so the final restoration or crown looks natural and matches the existing natural teeth.

Implant Placement

After an implant is placed, a cover screw is put over the implant to enable the implant to heal.  This process can take 4-6 months for the implant to integrate into the bone. A healing cover is placed over the dental implant while the tissue heals.

Restoration Options

Abutment and Crown – The abutment is screwed onto the implant, and the crown is cemented onto the abutment. The abutment can be shaped and adjusted to fit many angles that allow the crown to look natural.

Additional Dental Implant Information

Screw Retained Crown

A crown is one unit that screws into the implant.  A small access hole through the top of the crown and secures the tooth.  Then a small filling is placed to cover the access hole.

Multiple Teeth Missing

The process is about the same for one implant or multiple implants.  The planning process allows your dentist at Magnuson Dental to understand the bone quality and the number of implants needed to fill large areas.  The ultimate goal is to make the dental implants look natural and reestablish the patient’s bite (occlusion).

Implants for Dentures

The process is the same for implants needed to support dentures. The implants are spaced and planned digitally to aid in support of the future denture.  Planning is essential so that the implants are not placed too close together or potentially cause instability of the denture.  Implant-supported dentures are stable and secure, especially for lower dentures where retention or suction may be of concern.
